OUTSTANDING PBIS SCHOOL FOR 2009
Sherwood Middle was recently awarded the Outstand PBIS (Postive Behavior and Intervention Support) School for 2009.
Sherwood was recognized for its innovative and successful programs that they have establish in providing a positive learning environment. Sherwood Middle's PBIS program is all inclusive. Everyone on campus plays an active role in promoting positive behaviors and addressing those unwanted behaviors with interventions so that they won't happen again.
The faculty team has grown in number over the past three years from a small handful to a compliment of 15+ faculty and administrators. All faculty members on campus take an active role in the implementation of positive actions and rewards as well as the students.
Last year the students competed in a campus wide poster competition that set the norms for behaviors in our hallways, Commons Area, gymnasium and assemblies. The winning posters are now a part of the RAD motto and are on display in their respective locations to remind the students of their own expectations. This year a new student component has been established. A Student Advisory Team has been formed with four representatives from each grade level. These students meet twice a month along with their facilitators, Mr. Berthelot and Mrs. Slack, and discuss and brainstorm any behavior problems that may be present. The results of their discussions are then taken to the faculty PBIS meeting and become part of the overall plan.
Sherwood is fortunate to have a group of teachers, administrators and students who are willing to work with each other to make Sherwood the best it can be.
Also, last year's PBIS team coach for Sherwood, Mrs. Alesha Cavanaugh, was awarded the Outstanding 2009 PBIS Team Coach for East Baton Rouge Parish School System.

MOST VALUABLE PROFESSIONAL
At Sherwood Middle, we have many talented, knowledgeable and gifted teachers, support staff and admistrators who have a genuine desire to see your children succeed. And even though we would like to spotlight every one on our school staff, we do take the opportunity to highlight one each month.
For the month of October our Most Valuable Professional is Mr. Chad Segura.
Mr. Segura is a member of our fantastic math department. Nominating comments about Mr. Segura mentioned his expertise with technology and his willingness to share that knowledge with others. Other comments spoke of his role at the IMT leader for the Math Department and his dedication in working with IMT's from around the parish. Mr. Segura is also a member of the school's PBIS team and works hard with Mr. Brown our Dean of Students compiling data on behavioral issues. He then takes his results and presents them to the faculty in a manner that is understandable and allows the teachers and administrtors to focus on those areas that need attention. The English Language Arts Department was complimentary when speaking about Mr. Segura as they mentioned the AR Grade Calculator that he developed so that they would have a simple and useable tool to compile grades for students.
Mr. Segura we are very grateful that you are a member of our Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet Family.

Positive Behavior Support
|
 |
In an effort to instill in our students the character traits that will help
them become successful, the Postive Behavior Support team will be posting each
week, three character traits that students can think about and apply in their
lives.
-
Joyfulness vs
Self-Pity: Maintaining a
good attitude, even when faced with unpleasant conditions
-
Justice vs
Corruption: Taking personal
responsibility to uphold what is pure, right and true
-
Loyalty vs
Unfaithfulness: Using difficult
times to demonstrate my commitment to those I serve
