Guidance Groups

Counseling groups for young people provide an atmosphere of acceptance, encouragement, and safe experimentation for new behaviors (Morganett, 1990). In addition, because peers strongly influence the young adolescent, group counseling enhances the possibility that youths will attempt new behaviors practiced and modeled by their peers and significant others (Gazda, 1989).

Guidance counselors at Sherwood Middle School work to address the needs of their students through providing five guidance groups. Guidance groups that are offered are as follows: grief/loss; divorce; family issues; anger management; and self-esteem/friendship skills.

Guidance groups meet during the school day for approximately 30 minutes. Students or parents may request to participate in group counseling.

A Valuable Department

The Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School Counselors are a very active and integral part of our school’s setting. They offer many programs and services for our students as they cope with adjusting to the life of becoming an early teen. It can be a confusing and daunting time for these young people but the women who make up our counseling department are always there to lend a hand, a shoulder or advice to help these young people cope.
