Description
Youth Legislature Group is part of the Pre Law Program.
Students enrolled in the 2nd Year Pre Law Program will have the option to become member of Youth Legislature Group. Other students who are not in 2nd Year Pre Law who would like to join Youth Legislature should contact Mr. Berthelot or Mrs. Hines to get more information.
Other students who wish to be in the Youth Legislature Group BUT are not in 2nd Year Pre Law can still be a part of the Youth Legislature Group. Those students need to see Mr. Berthelot personally to discuss what is expected and how you can participate.
All members of the Youth Legislature Group MUST join another enrichment group when the sign up period begins. Because the Youth Legislature Group will be mostly if not entirely the 2nd Year Pre Law class, students will be able to work on any bill and speech writing during planned class time. On Enrichment Group Day these students will need a group to attend. That is the reason for joining another group besides Youth Legislature.
There will be some after school days planned for working on bills. These aren’t mandatory, but will offer students the opportunity to work with their partners.
There is a $30 fee required to participate. This money goes to Camp Fire USA, the sponsors of the program. They provide the facilities, bill books and T-Shirts for all participants.
On the days of our legislature in the spring, parents/guardians will need make arrangements to bring their child to and pick their child up from the facility. The Old State Capitol building has been the location in the past. Scheduling public school buses isn’t feasible because the drivers are already scheduled to pick children up prior to and after school. More details for these arrangements will be given out once the program begins.
Purpose for the group: To learn about the legislative process.
Activities: Members will work during the year preparing for competition against other schools from EBR and the surrounding parishes in the legislative process. They will assume the duties of Senators, Representatives, Press Delegates and Officers. Members will research, create and develop laws to present before the mock legislature where they will spend two days at the conference which is held at the Old State Capital building.
