History Tree Ornaments
Point Value: 15 pts.

Description:

HISTORY TREE ORNAMENT: Assignment Directions - (15 pt. bonus)

All students have seen my lighted tree in the corner of the classroom! It seems a little bare, so in keeping with the spirit of the holiday season, I am giving students an opportunity to decorate my tree by creating original pieces of art that represent different historical topics that we have covered so far this school year. Here's what you will be required to do:

1. Choose one of the topics listed below. These topics are VERY broad. From this time period/general topic, select a famous figure/event/document/etc. to use as the theme of your ornament. You will create an symbol that represents your selection (This will become your ornament EX. TEA CRATE - Boston Tea Party). Somewhere on your ornament (i.e. the back side, or hanging from your object) you must have a brief description of the event your object symbolizes and its significance to U.S. History. I am looking for creativity and originality. I don't want pictures copied from the internet and pasted to construction paper.... I would like for you to really let your creative energy shine! These ornaments will be displayed on our tree for the remainder of the school year! Please keep size in mind when you are creating your ornaments. Please do not make them extremely large! That will take up too much room on the tree and other students' work will not be able to be displayed. A good rule of thumb for size.... it should not be larger than a 3"x5" index card! Please put your name on your ornament!

Topics to choose from:

13 English Colonies; French and Indian War; Causes of the American Revolution; The Declaration of Independence; Battles of the Revolution; Famous Figures of the Revolution; Articles of Confederation; The Constitutional Convention; Parts of the Constitution(i.e. Preamble, Articles, Amendments); Goals/Principles of the Constitution; Branches of Government; Rights and Responsibilities of Citizens.

OH, and one more thing.... REALLY give this some thought! Just turning in an American Flag won't cut it for this one!!!

This assignment will be due by December 10th (A & B Day Classes)

LSU RURAL LIFE MUSEUM HARVEST DAYS
September 26 – 27, 2009

The LSU Rural Life Museum will present the fourteenth annual Harvest Days on September 26 & 27, 2009. This educational event will interpret life in nineteenth century rural Louisiana. Living history demonstrations by twenty five renowned artisans will focus on agricultural and domestic activities common on plantations and farms at harvest time.

This year there will be even more activity, as the Rural Life Museum commemorates the 147th anniversary of the Civil War Battle of Baton Rouge. Led by the Seventh Louisiana Infantry Company K, several hundred re-enactors will authentically portray the battle of August 1862. Demonstrations of drills and the battle will take place both days, complete with mounted cavalry and cannons shooting blank ammunition. The daily life of soldiers and citizens will be portrayed through Civil War encampments.

Harvest Days will be entertaining for all ages. Children will enjoy numerous hands-on activities and old-fashioned games. Lunch will be offered for sale, so plan to bring the whole family and spend the day. The gift shop will offer an array of handmade and unique folk items.

Harvest Days will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday, Sepetember 26 and Sunday Sepetember 27. For this event all visitors will be charged regular admission for both days and credit cards will not be accepted for admission. The Rural Life Museum is located at 4560 Essen Lane at I-10 in Baton Rouge. For more information, please call (225) 765-2437.
